Grapevine's History
In October 1843, General Sam Houston and fellow Republic of Texas Commissioners
camped at Tah-Wah-Karro Creek, also known as Grape Vine Springs, to meet
with leaders of 10 Indian nations. This meeting culminated in the signing
of a treaty which opened the area for settlement by homesteaders and pioneers.
The settlement was named Grapevine because of its location on the Grape
Vine Prairie and its proximity to Grape Vine Springs.
The first recorded settlement in Grapevine occurred in the late 1840s
and early 1850s. The Confederate general Richard Montgomery Gano had property
there on what is now the location of the Dallas/Fort Worth International
Airport. By 1890 the town had about 800 residents along with a newspaper,
public school, cotton gins, a post office, and a railroad. The city continued
to grow during the 20th century, and on January 12, 1914, the post office
changed the town name to the one-word title Grapevine, after the area
had been known by several other names.
